Familiy, Love and War

Now that I have read further into the book, the climax is starting. Jonas now has the ability to see colors in his everyday life, but that isn't it. He also receives memories of pain like an elephant being shot and one that's killing the Giver, the memory of war. Jonas can't believe how people could do that but still he somehow wants to shares the memories with the community. He once tried to share a memory with Lilly but didn't work then he tried with Baby Gabe and worked!! Gabe is like Jonas!! Also the Giver and Jonas talk about love and the Giver's favourite memory, family and Christmas. Jonas thinks love is a strong feeling but isn`t sure about so he stopped taking the pill to feel it for himself.

Chapters 13 through 16 really show indivuduality and now Jonas is starting to show he doesn't just has it but wants it. The quote '' If everything's the same, then there aren't any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things! A blue tunic or a red one? said Jonas'' (97.) Jonas really show individuality as something good. He now believes choosing for yourself is good and that the community should have those rights. Yet other parts of the book show controversy because Jonas also gets to see the painful memories and knows that wouldn't benefit the community. I believe people shouldn't rely on others to take decisions and individuality makes you unique and special, additionaly makes your life have reason.

Click on the video to see individuality vs. conformity (sameness).

Jonas´ society is extremely weird, they don't have love, colors, animals nor anything that StAnDs OuT. This community is afraid, lives worried, waking up every morning for the community not themselves. How can people be happy in a world like this?

  1. Amalia, you made me look at the book from a different perspective. I also believed Jonas was starting to see individuality is important but I had not taken into full notice that there was a big controversy there, caused by the painful memories. I agree with you on this fully. Jonas is facing a tough road ahead of him.
